Sauerbraten to use a Credit Card authentication system...

Okay, we've officially decided that the best way to implement security in Sauerbraten is using a credit card authentication system. For the low-low introductory price of $39.95 (after which it is $29.95 monthly), you will receive a subscription to the Sauerbraten master server, a gold-plated ogro figurine, and a 1,300 page hard cover manual with magnifying glass (OED style).

On game start, you will be asked to verify your CC# so that it matches our records, after which the master server will give you a temporary token to connect to other servers with. Every 5 minutes thereafter you will be asked to turn to a selected page, paragraph, word, and letter in the manual, and use the included magnifying glass to identify the secret code lettered in extremely small print at the specified position to continue playing.

Also, due to US The Child Protection Act, no one of the age of 13 or under shall be allowed to set up an account, even with parental consent, as we must protect children.

You forget who we're talking to. These aren't OSS users. These are gamers. The sad fact is that, no matter how much fun games are as an art form, the user base is the scum of the Earth. In case you need reminding, go visit an Electronic Boutique.

If you're lucky, you might attract the attention of the fringe social deviants we call "hardcore gamers" - but by and large the audience are bored adolescents, teenagers, and college students looking for a cheap thrill.

Given the quality of discourse on most gamer threads, I thought this was obvious.

I have to agree with pxtl on this one. I think the fact that a game is free, causes all sorts to grab it. The majority of truly "hard core" gamers are playing commercial games.

Definately sucks, but freeware seems to attract very childish, thoughtless people. Well, there are a few in the sauer community that are cool people...though most are the contributors, not the players :/

The same people that threw a fit about this post, are the kind that have a PC full of pirated/warezed software...and I think we could do without them. This is the kind of person that seems to think they are a majority, and it's OK to get free software that should be paid for. I guess they think that the people that put time into the code do not deserve payment...a very simple-minded, narrow train of thought to think that way, imo.

Just for the record, I would pay for Sauer...but I think $30 a month would be pushing it, even with a gold statue ;)

@Aard: The reason most people got this game is *because* it is free. It's all people looking for a timewaster/fun thing that's free. Hence the FREE part of freeware. I really hate to say this, but the game is really not worth paying for yet in any case. Besides, donations are always an option for people with money to spare :).
@Pxtl: Dead on. Except the part that insults my intelligence. Cheap thrill with decent quality is popular in most cases.
@kurtis84: I agree. That much money is too much for a game, even a really good/fun one. That's why I don't play WoW/EQ2. Also, I don't see how you can manage to insult my intelligence, maturity, and morality in a single post. Please don't

RedFox5 What are you talking about? This game engine is extremely good when you consider that this engine is being developed by a very small group of individuals, and you should be grateful that he is providing it free of charge and open source. It is just awful to read comments like yours, telling the lead programmer that his game is not good enough to charge for. Learn some respect, even if you are too cheap to pay for games, leave those comments to yourself.

Sauerbraten owns! Even though I have bought UT2004 years ago, I am spending most of time playing Sauer! It's not cause it is freeware, it is because the game is fun, and is done very well.

Really, I am a GNU/Linux user and therefore understand how valuable this project is. Surely if Sauerbraten was just freeware, I would still spend time playing :)

Sauerbraten is also liked by more powerful gamers because simply it has good physics and very simple gameplay that would only need skill!

I have to admit, Sauerbraten is the purest DM game bar none.

I've played every Quake game, every DooM game, every Unreal Tournament game, and all of these games defined a certain genre. Sauerbraten gets the best bits of all of them (including Quake 4's visuals ;) and, put it this way, there is no other instagib experience quite like it ;)

And no, not just little script kiddies who can't afford a legal copy of Battlefield 2 play this, I own a legal copy of practically every popular multiplayer game on the market, and I play Sauerbraten probably most frequently (can't say for sure because damn Xfire doesn't support Sauer :( )

Yeah, Sauer rules !

There is no other game comparable with its possibilities, and i also play it more frequently than any other game. Its pure and fast gameplay is just awesome, and if there was a "finished full version" which i had to pay for, i would do that.

Not to mention that if there was a finished version, it surely would have an own esl-ladder, too ;)

Imho, this game is like a gift and simply the best mp-fps ever !

Please Aard,I suggest you to seriously to make SauerBraten use a credit card registration system,The game is fun and all and yes it may sacrifice some of the players but it is worth to make SauerBraten with registration system since today I've met 2 idiots that are Boilover and David Prock and their weapons are modified,One was using a rapid shotgun and the other a rapid rocket launcher,Please Aard Appel I really suggest to use a credit card registration system in a future Sauer version,If I was you,I would take this topic serious and yes I will pay for Sauer,I'm addicted to this FPS Game.

I don't think that Sauer will go this way.

However, and this is a good idea - I think that making a small mod for Sauer would be a great thing - simply, modify the server to use some kind of authentication that would be controlled by a website.
So basically, a user registers on a website, and then logins, where their IP address is recorded. When they try to connect to a server, the server checks if their IP address has logged in and then allows the access to the server. This would allow for a simple punk-buster system.

(!) Clever idea ;-)

I think that some people will be happy about this, and this encourages me to make some nice things ;-)
